Brief
“Bo-gart. Transitive verb. To force others to wait by keeping something for oneself, notably marijuana.”
Bogart is a film about three friends who meet up to get high; but they lack the one essential ingredient. A bet is made to see who can collect fastest. With time running out, a scramble ensues to see who can score first.
The project needed a one-sheet poster design that, as well as capturing the film’s personality, depicted the three central characters and the two main themes; the pressure of time, and of course marijuana.
Solution
Bogart itself is built around tight character interactions and witty dialogue. There weren’t many big visuals to build from to create a broad representation of the film. After exploring possible routes to take, the best way forward resulted in being created from the ground up using an abstract styling. The two themes from the brief; time pressure and partaking came together within the merging of an egg-timer structure and a simplified head and shoulder layout. The pouring sand not only gave definition to the psychedelia filled lungs, but also perilous accommodation for the protagonists, all swiftly running out of time.
The simple and vibrant colours were chosen to show the energy and light tone of the film, whilst the large, bold, uncomplicated type allowed clarity without distracting from the decorative centre-piece lung design.

Result
The project gained a simple, fun and conceptual one-sheet design that covered all of the brief’s requirements without feeling forced. Bogart had an eye catching poster to get it seen at festivals.
